Arizona law requires members of the Legislature to vote on final passage of every bill, memorial, and resolution except when a lawmaker has a conflict of interest or is officially excused. The bill would fine lawmakers the equivalent of one day’s pay if they miss a vote and do not have a conflict of interest or are officially excused. Currently, lawmakers make $24,000 a year.
The proposal is sponsored by Representative Jerry Weiers (R- Glendale) and had no co-sponsors. It passed its first committee on a 5-4 vote. Tucson Representative Frank Antenori (R-Tucson) voted in favor of the proposal.
