Listen:
The Mexican consulate in Tucson has been flooded with phone calls since President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration. They have been receiving about 400 calls a day.
Most of the calls are regarding Obama’s policy, which will give some immigrant parents of U.S. citizens a temporary work permit and protections against deportation, officials with the consulate said.
Obama’s initiatives announced Thursday have not yet been implemented. Some will take effect in the next several months, others will take longer, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
In the meantime, Mexican officials in Arizona want to provide the correct information and prevent people from becoming victims of scams from criminals who prey on vulnerable populations, such as undocumented immigrants.
The Mexican consulate in Tucson has set up a hotline, 1-855-463-6395, and a mobile app to help answer questions.
