Border Patrol agents apprehend migrants outside of Sasabe, Arizona, in July 2024.

Border Patrol apprehended nearly 12,000 people in Arizona’s Tucson Sector in August, up slightly from July. But that number is still a far cry from the record high of December, which surpassed 80-thousand.
As well, San Diego and El Paso both surpassed the Tucson Sector for the most migrants apprehended.
Federal officials credit the drop, of more than 50% since June, to an increase in quick expulsions from the country and enhanced consequences for crossing unauthorized.
Nearly half the people who crossed in the Tucson region continue to be families and children.
