A scale and gavel
Mitchell abducted the middle school student while she was walking to school. He introduced himself as a law enforcement officer, asked for her papers and ordered her into his car.
He then drove her miles from her school to his apartment where he repeatedly sexually assaulted her.
Hours later, he returned her to the area of her middle school and told her not to tell anyone. She immediately reported the incident to friends, family and multiple law enforcement agencies.
A jury found Mitchell guilty of both a federal civil rights offense and a kidnapping charge, which included aggravated sexual abuse and bodily injury. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
