Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will speak in Phoenix Wednesday evening, in what aides said will be a focus on immigration.

The speech at the Phoenix Convention Center downtown will come after Trump meets in Mexico City with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, at Peña Nieto's invitation.

Trump is scheduled to begin speaking in Phoenix at 6 p.m., and numerous media reports have said he will offer clarity on his immigration policies.

He started his campaign last year excoriating Mexico and Mexicans, calling them "criminals" and "rapists" when they cross into the U.S. illegally. His call for building a concrete wall the entire length of the border and getting Mexico to pay for it has energized a base of support.

In the last 10 days, which included a meeting with Latino leaders, Trump has shifted his comments and said he might be willing to pursue a "softer" approach to illegal immigration.

His campaign aides have insisted all along that he has not changed positions.

Peña Nieto has been criticial of Trump, saying that there was no way his country would pay for a wall. At one point, he compared Trump to Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
