Kari Lake said that allowing the 1864 law to stand would incentivize voters to pass an initiative establishing a constitutional right to abortion in the state that is likely to be on the ballot in November.
“So if we have a law that does not have even an exception for a nine year old, 10-year-old girl, that was a victim of incest or a girl, a young woman, who’s been raped," Lake said. "People of this state, I know them. They are not going to support that and they’re going to end up voting for 9 months of abortion, and that is not an option.”
During an interview in 2022 when Lake was running for governor, she said she supported the Civil-War era law, according to Politifact.
Lake spoke to a room of about 100, many who were students, hosted by the UA College Republicans.
