On Monday, Tucson City Council member Steve Kozachik announced that he will resign his seat effective March 31.
He made the announcement in his weekly newsletter and said he will be the point of contact in managing the Mosaic Quarter sports complex for Pima County.
Between 1988 and 2020, Kozachik worked for the University of Arizona as the sports facility associate director.
He told AZPM that leaving the council now was not a difficult decision.
“To be fair to the constituents in Ward 6 in the city and to be fair to the county and the importance of this project I figured you have to fish or cut bait, and it was pretty easy call actually,” Kozachik said.
He was first elected to the Tucson City Council in 2009 as a Republican. When he ran for reelection he ran as a Democrat. He has maintained that registration since.
Kozachik said he has been able to do “some good things” while in office.
“I am proud of the preservation of the Benedictine Monastery. I'm proud of the fact that me and community members were able to get the Tucson Greyhound Park shut down. We've got some very significant rezoning, projects that we were able to push across the finish line in the last 12 months,” he said.
The Mayor and Council will select someone to fill out the remainder of Kozachik’s term which expires in December 2025.
