Tucson International Airport is expecting 259,000 travelers during the 2024 holiday rush, an increase of about 6% from the previous year.

A spokesperson for the group that oversees the airport said that increase is coming from new flights rather than more full flights.

"Whether it's cities like Chicago that have 78% more availability than last year or new service like Alaska Airlines flight to Sacramento, there's a lot of positive growth at the Tucson Airport," said Tucson Airport Authority Chief Communication Officer Austin Wright.

He added that the airport is ready to accommodate the rush, hopefully avoiding a major increase in wait times.

"You shouldn't feel a big difference in terms of the travel experience. The only thing I would highlight is sometimes the holiday brings out the less-than-seasoned traveler, so give yourself a few extra minutes than you normally would."

The holiday rush is expected to begin Dec. 18 and last until Jan. 5.

December 29th is expected to be the busiest travel day of the holiday rush, with more than 16,000 travelers.
