Pima County advances plans for Santa Cruz River conservation and wildlife refuge

New partnership aims to protect the Santa Cruz River’s riparian habitat and promote environmental education.

Santa Cruz River 2 Supporters say a new Santa Cruz River Urban National Wildlife Refuge would enhance the Tucson metropolitan area and beyond. Currently, paths along the river are popular for pedestrians, bicyclists and other users.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved a Memo of Understanding (MOU) between Pima County, the Pima County Regional Flood Control District, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to establish the Santa Cruz River Wildlife Partnership.

Supervisor and Chair Adelita Grijalva said the MOU will allow the County and Regional Flood Control District to collaborate with the federal agency to create a Santa Cruz River Urban National Wildlife Refuge.

“This effort will further protect the river and its invaluable riparian habitat for wildlife to thrive and for ourselves and future generations to enjoy,” Grijalva said.

The MOU will ensure that the parties provide environmental education and outreach to protect the area's cultural and wildlife resources.

It could also result in future federal dollars for river restoration and protection.
