The Arizona Attorney General’s office has announced that Arizona will receive a portion of the $1.4 billion settlement in principle with Kroger for their role in the opioid crisis.
The ongoing negotiations with the company and seven other state governments is part of a recent push to hold pharmacies accountable for business practices that may have contributed to the ongoing opioid crisis.
Kroger operates two subsidiaries in Arizona, Smith’s and Fry's.
The settlement totaling nearly $1.4 billion will be distributed to state and local governments as well as tribal communities. Exactly how much money each body will receive is still contingent upon a final settlement.
According to a press release from the Attorney General, Kroger is required to agree to “critical business practice changes” before financial terms can be settled. The Attorney General’s office said no further details were available on those changes at this time, but to expect a final settlement in the coming months.
