Two of the men, who were all in their 30s, were U.S. residents and one was a U.S. citizen. Their car bore Oregon plates. Mexican authorities said they were headed to visit family in the Mexican state of Michoacán.
The incident was reported by Sonoran media outlets, and was first reported locally by Emily Bregel with the Arizona Daily Star.
The shooting happened around 2 am Saturday about halfway between Altar and Santa Ana, on one of the alternate routes to get from Arizona to Puerto Penasco since the closure of the Lukeville port of entry.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, but officials say this was an isolated incident. Mexican officials have added more security to the federal highways and say it’s safe to travel during the day.
