Arizona voters will not get a chance to decide on the future of intersection cameras to catch red light runners.
The Arizona Senate has twice rejected SCR 1029, which would have put on the November ballot a referendum on the legality of red light and speeding cameras in the state.
Sen. Rick Murphy, R-Glendale, voted in favor of sending the measure to the ballot, saying the problem with the cameras is they catch technical violators who are just trying to get out of the intersection and would never be ticketed by police.
Murphy also said it is those tickets that make the system financially viable.
The proposal was sponsored by Sen. Frank Antenori, R- Vail, who said the companies running the cameras are spending plenty of time at the State Capitol to defeat any proposal banning the devices.
