Pima Community College has been banned from enrolling military veterans, who pay for their studies with veterans education benefits, for at least 60 days following violations in a number of areas.
The Arizona Department of Veterans Services imposed the penalties because they argue the college has poor record-keeping of students who receive veterans education benefits.
Other violations included the school's failure to notify the VA of changes that affected the amount of payment to beneficiaries, failure to ensure veteran students are enrolled in approved programs, and failure to maintain a record of veterans' previous education and training.
Federal rules in education aid to veterans requires schools to notify the VA if students quit, flunk out or take courses that aren't approved programs.
In a letter to Pima's Chancellor Lee Lambert, the VA said the suspension only affects enrollment of new students. Veteran students already enrolled in the college will not be affected.
This is the second year in a row that the VA cited the violations. The agency said after the first citation, Pima prepared a plan of action, which they failed to implement.
