Cochise County’s Election Director Tim Mattix announced his resignation Tuesday, according to a news release from the county. He was appointed to head elections in the county in October of last year.
Tim Mattix’s resignation will be effective April 20, about three months before the primary election on July 30.
According to the county’s news release, Mattix’s resignation was due to “personal family reasons.”
"I am greatly disappointed that I will not be able to continue in this role," said Mattix in his letter of resignation, according to the news release. "I was hoping to have provided stability for the elections department through the 2024 elections season. I have tried to lay a foundation for the department to continue to improve operations and make enhancements into the future."
County officials say in the release that Mattix’s departure from the county was purely personal and that the county did not “experience any disruption, intimidation, or threats during this election cycle.”
In that same release, Cochise County Administrator Richard Karwaczka announced the appointment of Marisol Renteria as the Interim Elections Director for the county. The county says that Renteria is a certified election official with 13 years of experience in Cochise County elections.
"We are grateful to have an experienced and fully trained and certified election official like Marisol Renteria willing and able to step into this important role," said Karwaczka in the April 2 news release from the county. "Marisol played a crucial role in March's successful Presidential Preference Election in Cochise County. I am confident in her ability to make this transition in a way that reinforces the robust infrastructure we have in place."
