TOPIC: Climate
Do you support the city taking any of the following actions to deal with climate change?
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Create a climate action plan with targets for carbon emissions reductions.
Increase the city's use of renewable energy sources.
Incentivize businesses to increase renewable energy use.
Encourage the community to support actions that reduce carbon emissions, but no formal city role.
Expand use of electric buses and other city vehicles.
Require rainwater harvesting on all new development.
Expand or require more tree planting in public spaces citywide.
Expand greenspace (parks, non-paved public space, development regulations).
Prioritize economic development among businesses with climate change plans.
Create/expand programs to help residents learn about and pay for home/behavioral modifications.
Encourage energy efficient technology and building upgrades in city properties.
This is not a city responsibility.
Explain your answer (optional)
Paul Cunningham “I am exploring ways to allow HOAs and Neighborhood Associations to switch to solar power. I also want to see deactivated city-owned landfills used for solar panels and battery storage. I’ve led on keeping our grey water standards in the building code and on water harvesting efforts.”
William Peterson “We only have one planet Earth and we must act now to save it!.”
TOPIC: Roads/Infrastructure
If given only one choice, what is the best way for the city to pay for road repair today?
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Increase taxes.
Reallocate existing funds.
Explain your answer (optional)
Paul Cunningham “Two options is too simplistic. I have supported both. I was supportive of both the transportation bond and temporary sales tax initiatives, but we need to take control of funding our own transportation future. In the past 5 years, we have worked to improve every arterial corridor in Ward 2.”
William Peterson “If existing bonds or other revenue streams are available, that would be a more viable option rather than raising taxes.”
Ewart Williams
Ewert L. Williams Jr. “Funds meant for the roads should only be used for roads.”
Select all of the transportation strategies the city should spend money on.
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Buses/expanding bus routes.
Streetcar/expanding streetcar route.
Multi-use: maintaining/expanding bike routes, sidewalks, bus pullouts.
Widening roads to increase vehicle capacity.
Bike share, scooter share programs.
Adding electric buses to the Sun Tran fleet.
Road repair (filling potholes, reconstructing bad roads).
Accessibility (ADA compliance such as sidewalk ramps).
Bus stop shelters.
Street lighting.
None of the above.
TOPIC: Sanctuary City
Do you support the sanctuary city initiative going before voters this fall?
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Yes
No
Why or why not?
Paul Cunningham “This is a choice for the voters. While I have misgivings about the whole initiative, there are parts of it that I’d be willing to work with my colleagues on should it not pass. My colleagues and I have worked to create an immigrant-friendly city and will continue to do so.”
William Peterson “It would protect our immigrant community from racial profiling.”
Ewart L. Williams “Loss of state and federal funding. Take care of our homeless first.”
Do city policies already do enough to protect immigrant interactions with law enforcement?
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Yes
No
Explain (optional)
Paul Cunningham “My colleagues and I worked with TPD command staff to add protections in the general orders given to officers. My preference would be to continue to work with TPD as issues continue to arise.”
William Peterson “The police along with the Sherriff conduct traffic stops that and up with the occupants being illegally detained. Operation Stonegarten.”
TOPIC: Housing
Is the city doing enough to prevent and/or end homelessness?
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Yes
No
Explain (optional)
Paul Cunningham “Homelessness will continue to be an issue, and it’s hard to say that any city “does enough”. Where appropriate, we need to ensure that developers have plans for workforce housing when they ask us for new projects. ”
William Peterson “We have a significant number of homeless people in Tucson. Some Veterans are living on the street, which is inexcusable.”
How important is it for the city of Tucson to make policies that support housing affordability?
12345
Not important at allPaul CunninghamWilliam PetersonEwart WilliamsExtremely important
Gentrification is a problem in Tucson.

TOPIC: Economic development
Do you support the continued use of tax incentives for businesses to encourage growth in certain parts of the city?
Action Cunningham Peterson Williams
Yes
No
Maybe
Why or why not? Which parts of the city?
Paul Cunningham “I am generally supportive of our current incentives. In Ward 2, not all of the incentives would be practical, but we can find ways to encourage redevelopment of underutilized commercial space in our area, particularly in the case of a couple of now abandoned “Big Box” stores.”
William Peterson “As long as the small business owners are protected.”
Ewart Williams
Ewart L. Williams Jr. “Yes if we are not giving away the farm when giving incentives.”
TOPIC: Open-ended
What is the No. 1 issue in your ward?
Paul Cunningham “Opportunities for youth and young families. As a native Tucsonan, I want everyone who grows up here to be able to stay and make a career. It’s important to grow our economy, with big employers and local companies. We also need recreational opportunities, with park improvements and expanding Kidco.”
William Peterson “Housing”
Ewart L. Williams Jr. “Roads”
What is your favorite restaurant in your ward?
Paul Cunningham “Wings Over Broadway. It’s owned by a local entrepreneur and it’s my favorite place to watch a game.“
William Peterson “Wings Over Broadway”
Ewart L Williams Jr. “Pinnacle Peak”
